Undergraduate Program in Chemistry

Which Degrees Are Available?
Three different degrees are available in chemistry. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree requires a total of 124 credit hours including at least 24 credit hours in chemistry and a lesser concentration (a minor) in another field of your choice. Although the B.A. is ideally suited for career goals such as medicine, patent law, scientific writing, or a variety of health and technological fields, it does not provide the breadth or depth required for a professional chemist or advanced graduate study.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is a comprehensive degree requiring a total of 132 credit hours including at least 38 credit hours in chemistry and a number of associated courses in mathematics and physics. The B.S. degree from TCU is certified by the American industries throughout the country. This degree is also available with a biochemical emphasis

What Will I Experience While Studying Chemistry at TCU?

The chemistry program at TCU provides the student with:

  • Practical course work that requires students to solve chemical problems
  • A theoretical understanding of physical and chemical phenomena
  • Laboratory experiences that develop technical skills and expose students to modern instrumentation
  • An appreciation of the history of chemistry and its relationships to other sciences

Many students choose to study chemistry beyond the confines of organized courses by working in research laboratories. Undergraduate research projects are carried out under the direction of a faculty member and are designed to enhance the student's ability to analyze data and create new chemical knowledge. With the help of an advisor, each chemistry major can design a program of study that satisfies not only University requirements but also individual career goals.

In addition to classroom and laboratory work, students are encouraged to participate in all departmental activities such as seminars, sporting events, picnics, plant trips and attendance at science meetings. There is an undergraduate chemistry club that promotes pride and knowledge in the profession and provides further opportunity for social interchange among students, faculty, and other professionals. The department is a sponsor of the TCU Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society of North America.
